Purpose
Leatherwork, for me, is a study on attention. I was reading The World Beyond Your Head by Matthew B. Crawford, and his comments on how what we allow ourselves to pay attention to shapes our lives, and finding individuality when you lose yourself in something really attracted me to begin exploring physical crafts.
Leather requires a high level of attention in order achieve a desired outcome. There’s a balance between controlling your movements and surrendering to what the material allows. There’s this constant dialogue when working with a material in craft, it’s never about just making an object, it’s about cultivating this physical dialogue between the mind, body, and material.
This study explores attention and patience. Each journal I make is both a product and a by-product of learning; shaped by the mistakes, refinements, and repetitive care that come from working slowly. Leather, ultimately, is an unforgiving medium. There is an understanding that comes before mastery; an understanding of grounding oneself in the world, and how making something tangible can return meaning to the act of work itself.
