Purpose
Keoni Studio is a practice, not a brand. A way of life expressed through crafts and art. But as it developed in my mind and grew into a more intentional part of my life, I felt the need for a visual language that could unify it all together. An identity that evokes coherence, a unification of my reflections, my craft, and my ideals.
I’ve resisted calling it a brand for a long time. Branding felt commercial, performative, and Keoni Studio is supposed to be the opposite of that. So crafting an identity meant finding a language that was thoughtful, slow, and intentional.
Exploration
Inspiration
The identity for Keoni Studio draws from multiple sources. The colors are inspired by materials used in crafts and creation, like stone and paper. The logo was inspired by maker’s marks and hanko stamps, simple identifiers used by craftspeople to sign their work. It needed to feel human and versatile, something could easily be pressed into clay or stamped onto leather. For typography, I looked to traditional serif typefaces found in older printed works. Fonts like Crimson Text and Playfair Display carry small imperfections that make them feel alive. The result is an identity that feels handmade, grounded, and connected to the practice it represents.
Mood Board
Logo
The logo is built from a single continuous gesture, a stylized cursive k where the stroke extends and forms the outline of a rounded rectangle itself. This creates a mark that functions less like a modern logo and more like a maker’s mark. It was designed to feel hand-drawn, minimal, and adaptable to to both physical and digital uses.
Typography
Crimson Text
Crimson Text is used for headings and titles. It was chosen because it feels like a typeface designed for printed books; human, readable, and rooted in traditional typesetting. It has small imperfections and variations that make it feel lived-in. It supports the tone of Keoni Studio by being textural and humanist.
Playfair Display
Playfair Display is used for subheadings, accents, and body text, places where a bit more expression was needed. It has higher contrast and more refined details than Crimson Text, but still maintains a classical, serif structure. It brings a sense of playfulness without being immature. Rather than competing with the primary font, it complements it by adding structure and hierarchy.
