To assist with the concerns of structure and stability of the spine, doubling up on the leather there will add additional stability. It also gives me the opportunity to do a contrasting interior panel or contrast stitching.
I also believe that removing the corner hardware may be possible with the rounded corners. They wont bend or compress like a square corner, and a much tighter rounding may work to maintain protection for the corners of the book and other inserts. I believe the protective leather for the closing elastic can be removed as I’m not seeing any noticeable wear after 2 weeks of heavy use. Will reevaluate as time progresses.
Might need to skiv some of the flesh off of the covers next to the spine. To give the spine a space to rest when closed. Best to do a second prototype.
I think a ⅛” overhang of the cover is a good distance for protection without warping the leather when the elastic holds it closed. This was based on a quick test with my journal.
